Casting a spell can be complex and intricate, with a multitude of supplies — or it can be as simple as lighting a single match. From good luck, health and prosperity — to love spells and hexes, a single matchstick can be an incredibly powerful tool for a witch who knows their stuff. If you want to learn how to cast powerful spells with matches, keep reading.

The Lover’s Match

If you wish to maintain the stability and love of your current romantic relationship, a single matchstick is all you need. Obtain a single match and put it in a small plastic baggie, or leave it in its match box or booklet. Keep this matchstick on you anytime you’re with your romantic partner, especially while making loving memories with them. They can be aware of the match, but it’s not necessary. Doing this charges the match with the loving energy of your relationship. Do this for approximately one month. The night of the first new moon following a month of carrying the match, go somewhere outdoors where you are comfortable, and where you will not be disturbed. Say the following:

“Our love is strong, our bond unbreakable.”

Focus on the loving energy surrounding your matchstick while you recite the words. Once you’ve spoken, strike the match and let it burn. The act of this is symbolic of burning passion and lasting love.

Feel free to alter or edit the spell according to your own needs.

A Nasty Little Hex

If someone’s wronged you, you have the right to strike back to defend yourself spiritually. You can achieve this with a match that’s been extinguished with your own saliva. Simply obtain a match and hold it in your hand while you focus your need into the object through visualization and meditation. Think about the person, group or situation which left you feeling wronged, and imagine them getting a taste of their own medicine. Be as specific in your focus as possible, according to your own specific situation.

Once you feel like you’ve “charged” the matchstick enough, simply light it and hold it very carefully in your fingertips as it burns. Say a chant if you wish, though it is not necessary. Blow the match out before it burns your fingertips and then blow it a little more so that it cools to the touch.

Take the burned matchstick to a location where the person who wronged you will cross paths with it, and simply drop it. This can be in a garbage can somewhere near their daily commute or even in an ashtray in their home. Once you’ve disposed of the match, don’t think about it or the situation that harmed you to the best of your ability.

Health and Wealth

A single match, when used the right way, can bring you abundance and success if your witchy heart desires it. Simply charge the match with your intent by visualizing a protective dome of light around you as you hold it. Speak aloud what you want to achieve by lighting the match, and be specific. Think about your words, what you’re saying, and what you truly want as you speak aloud. Once you feel satisfied in what you truly want, raise the match up, strike it and let it burn. Blow the match out before it reaches your fingertips and then put it somewhere safe in your home — such as a jewelry or trinket box where it will not be disturbed.

Mabon is just around the corner, which means autumn is almost here. If you’re an atheist witch who doesn’t necessarily follow holidays, the autumn equinox is a great time to get in touch with your spiritual side without the need for religious worship. It’s a time that marks the end of summer and welcomes the biggest harvest of the year on the Northern Hemisphere. It’s the winding-down of the year that guides us into the cooler winter months. The symbolism of the changing of the weather, and the shortening of the days, offers a multitude of themes for your spellcasting.

Cord-cutting and goodbyes

Do a cord cutting spell during Mabon, and allow the decreasing length of the days ahead to do the spiritual lightwork for you. If you’re healing from an ended relationship, or you’re simply dealing with old trauma, the autumn equinox can symbolize putting old feelings to rest.

If you’ve been thinking about ending a friendship or cutting ties with an associate, now is the time to do it. In fact, the changing of any season is a good time to make a change because people — like our planet — go through the changing of seasons.

Comfort and Leisure

It’s been a rough few years for the entire planet, and things are only starting to feel “normal” again. Mabon 2022 could be a great time to seek out comfort and leisure. Bonfires, sleeping bags and roasted marshmallows could be the ideal theme for this year’s autumn equinox. Or, if you’re more of an indoor witch, a nice cozy blanket and a good book is just as wonderful. To make it an extra spiritual event, you can light some candles and make your own chants to allow your stress to blow away on the autumn breeze.

Alternatively, you can enjoy the changing season by taking a trip to your favorite place in nature. A serene hike ending in a cool-weather picnic overlooking the changing foliage of the season could help give you a “reset.”

Mabon with your own personal touch

Traditionally, Mabon is a pagan harvest holiday. This means food and drink play a big role in observing it. Bread, apples, decadent meats and others goods that are harvested or slaughtered this time of year are traditional symbols to Mabon and autumn in general. Ordinarily witches celebrate this autumn holiday by preparing foods associated with the season, and sometimes dumb suppers are held. You can participate in traditional celebration, but it’s also fun to add your own personal twist! Instead of making an apple pie or homemade loaf of bread, why not serve apple or pumpkin themed cocktails to your friends? The possibilities are endless when you add your own personality to everything you do from the mundane to the magical.

The most important thing a witch needs to learn is how to cast an effective protection spell. Protection spells keep you safe while dabbling with other types of spiritual work, and they keep you guarded from general negativity and wrongdoing. They also keep you safe from the ill intent of others — including fellow witches. The following protection spell is designed to specifically boomerang negativity back to its sender, making it a protection spell with a side of justice.

What you need:

Small mirror (a handheld cosmetic mirror is ideal)

Hammer

Small fabric pouch (thick fabric preferred)

A single canine tooth from a carnivorous animal (humanely/ethically obtained)

Cinnamon stick or powdered cinnamon

White tealight candle

Jar with lid (8 oz canning jar is perfect for this spell)

Cast the Spell:

Gather your materials and set up your altar or spellcasting area according to how you normally practice. If you do any type of circle casting or meditations prior to casting, do so.

  1. Place the small mirror into the cloth pouch. Place the pouch on the ground, or inside of a cardboard box. Secure the bag closed tightly.
  2. Smash the bag containing the mirror with the hammer. Strike it exactly four times — no more, no less. In Numerology, four is the number of justice. (note: The box is to contain the bag of glass, and to prevent any from getting out on the floor or ground. If you don’t have a box, be careful not to tear the bag when you hit it). Wear safety goggles and gloves to protect yourself while doing this.
  3. Carefully open the bag of broken mirror glass and empty it into the jar. Discard the cloth pouch.
  4. Drop the canine tooth into the jar with the broken shards of mirror.
  5. Drop the cinnamon stick into the jar with the other ingredients. If you don’t have whole sticks, a pinch or so of ground cinnamon will also work.
  6. Secure the lid on the jar and place your candle on top of it. Use a tealight candle or one that is slightly larger, without a holder or casing. Many tealights come with a metal sheath around them, but this can be removed with ease.
  7. Light the candle while you sit comfortably in front of your jarred creation. Once the candle is lit, envision the rays of the moon wrapping you and your home in a sort of forcefield of energy. Visualize this protective dome of light as being impenetrable. Nothing can get through it to you — and any negativity or ill-intent bounces off of the surface of your energy shield like rubber. Breathe deeply and keep your mind clear of any other thoughts as you meditate and visualize your intent.
  8. Continue visualizing the rays of light around you as the candle melts atop the jar. Envision the rays of light that emanate from your protective dome/shield as protective guardians that lash out in defense if anything negative comes your way. This might take some practice and patience, but focus your intent on this protective system as you focus on the melting candle.
  9. Repeat the following affirmation as you continue your visualization: “I am protected. I am shielded. I am guarded.”
  10. Allow the candle to melt and burn out on its own, keeping common fire safety in mind. Leave the jar somewhere around your property either near an entrance or somewhere in plain sight. Do not dispose of it. If you wish to repeat the candle portion of the spell, you can do so anytime you feel compelled.

Timing

You can cast this spell any time of the day, week, month or year. However, if you observe the moon phases and incorporate planetary placements with your spellwork, the first night of a full moon is a good time to cast this spell. While the moon is at its fullest, the days that follow lead to the New Moon. Symbolically, your protection spell is given energy by the fullness of the moon. Since the moon will go into its waning phases in the following days, this can symbolically represent the act of pushing that energy outward and away from you. This is useful in this particular spell because you are aiming to shield yourself with protection while also striking back — magically speaking — at any injustices against you.

Other options

If you’re superstitious and don’t want to break a mirror for this spell, you can choose any reflective material to substitute it. Even tearing aluminum foil into strips can be an effective replacement to a broken mirror. Use your imagination to edit and tweak this spell any way you wish to suit your needs, environment or comfort zone.

Lughnasadh is just around the corner (August 1st), and that means harvest season will also begin. Also called Lammas, this pagan holiday doesn’t have to involve the worship — or even belief — in deities in order for you to have a good time. Whether you normally celebrate spiritual holidays or not, if you want to enjoy yourself this Lughnasadh, the following suggestions might help.

Farm to Table Feast For Your Ancestors

Traditionally, this time of year was for harvesting the first grains and fruits of the season, shortly before the full fall harvest that followed. Modern Wiccans use this holiday much in the same manner, but bread is the focal point — and it is enjoyed to remember our ancestors. If you want to celebrate Lughnasadh in a similar fashion, you can harvest some of your early fruits and grains — if you have a garden — and make a delicious meal or treat in honor of your ancestors. Alternatively, you can visit a farmer’s market and purchase some early harvest goods, in case you don’t have a garden of your own.

If you really prefer tradition, making a fresh loaf of homemade bread is an excellent way to observe this time of year. Even if you don’t make an entire feast in honor of your ancestors, a tasty bread treat to enjoy is just as valid a way to observe Lughnasadh.

Redesign Your Altar

This is a wonderful time of year to redecorate your altar space, especially if you make use of items that are appropriate to the season. Sprigs of wheat or another grain are powerful symbols of Lughnasadh, as are summer gourd and squash vegetables (such as zucchini). Items symbolizing the fire element are good additions for this type of altar, as are sunflowers and fruits like peaches and plums. Displaying The Empress tarot card on your Lughnasadh altar symbolizes abundance and fertility as well as protection and familial bonds.

Cast a Spell

Harvest Day, or Lughnasadh, is a great day to cast spells pertaining to a variety of needs. A spell for abundance is always a good choice during the end of summer and beginning of autumn, but protection spells to assure you have a safe and fruitful rest of the year are even better. Spells to help other people are also ideal during this time of harvest, especially if these spells are to help feed and nourish people in need. Hearth spells that give protection to your home and family and spells for good health are also good choices. This year, Lughnasadh 2022, takes place while the moon is in a waxing crescent phase — heading toward the Full Moon in the first half of the month. If you wish to attract something to you, or encourage something to grow or flourish, Lughnasadh 2022 is a great day to cast these spells.

Witchcraft is an empowering tool for the oppressed, and a means of catharsis for those who feel powerless. From love magic and sweet jars to baneful magic and spells for justice and revenge, the craft is a domain that is open to everyone who wishes to use it — regardless of their moral philosophies. Nonetheless, it’s popular for religious-rooted morality to be sprinkled over the metaphysical — and even more popular to argue about it in the spiritual community. You can’t even utter a word about love spells or hexing without being lectured by droves of strangers who believe that they have the moral high-ground — but what does this have to do with witchcraft? Nothing, really.

‘Never start a marriage with a kidnapping’

Is casting a love spell akin to committing the act of kidnapping on another person? No, it’s not — but a lot of people seem to like comparing the two concepts. And even if love spells were the same as some sort of spiritual kidnapping, who’s to say it’s not a valid part of witchcraft in general? Just because someone has a problem with the so-called moral implications of love spells, doesn’t mean love spells don’t exist — and it doesn’t mean you can’t cast one if you feel so inclined. Furthermore, just because it’s popular to spout movie quotes about marriage and kidnapping in regards to witchcraft, doesn’t mean that’s how love spells even work according to every witch’s beliefs.

‘What you put out comes back to you threefold’

This is another common saying among witches who have the occult version of “Perfect Christian Syndrome.” It’s also a belief that is specifically Wiccan. Not all of us believe in a foolish and inauthentic threefold rule when it comes to casting spells — and witchcraft in and of itself clearly doesn’t need such a thing in order to exist. The entire concept only exists as a religious ideal, and it only serves as a tool for holier-than-thou types to try to posture themselves as morally superior.

Witchcraft is a tool, and tools don’t measure morality

Are you against hexes, revenge spells and love magic for moral reasons? If so, that’s your personal choice. You may even find that numerous people share these morals, or some variation of them. Nonetheless, the existence of witchcraft doesn’t depend on these morals — and the spells that other people cast aren’t bound by them, either.

As repeated so many times throughout this blog, witchcraft is a craft and nothing more. How you choose to use that craft is entirely up to you, but it doesn’t cease to be effective simply if you have different morals from another person. If you want to cast love spells, you’re totally able to. If you want to hex someone, you have the means to do that as well. If you have morals that stop you, that’s your business — but it’s your business alone. And the same can be said of those who lack moral roadblocks when it comes to how they practice the craft.

The recent overturning of Roe v Wade has left an ugly mark on the U.S., and has put countless women and children at risk. The magical resistance is needed now more than ever, as women’s reproductive rights and our personal liberties are under full blown attack. Many witches are hexing the SCOTUS judges who ruled to take away our rights, but there are other spells we can do to stand in unity against patriarchal and religious tyranny. The following green candle spell serves as a spiritual beacon for unity against oppression. Cast this spell if you wish to protect anyone impacted by the loss of their abortion rights.

What you need:

Green candle

Matches/lighter

The Spell:

Obtain a green candle. Green has become the color of the abortion rights movement, and in this spell it’s important to choose the appropriate color. Any shade of green will do as long as it is a green candle. Place the candle on a fire-safe dish in a safe non flammable area.

Choose the first night of the full moon. Any full moon during any month is fine for this spell. Prepare your altar or spellcasting area as you would for any other spell, including casting any kind of protection spells you cast prior to other spellwork.

Light the candle on the first night of the full moon. While lighting it recite the following:

“I send peace and healing to all those who need it, and roadblocks to those who want to take it away. May this candle light our paths to bodily freedom, and blind those who stand in the way.”

Allow the candle to burn until it is spent, repeating every night until the first night of the following new moon phase. Beginning the spell on the first night of the full moon and ending it on the first night of the new moon, symbolizes the pushing away of energies as you direct your intent outward.

The world is full of witchcraft-friendly neighborhoods and towns, but when it comes to the U.S., it’s a real gamble. If you’re a practicing witch and you’re looking for a new place to live, you might want to avoid some of the following towns.

Rossville, Illinois

For being just a stone’s throw from a big city, the small town of Rossville, Illinois is no place to live if you openly practice witchcraft. This place is so intoleZodiac of the craft, that the townspeople made media headlines for thow unwelcome they made Wiccans felt. The place does have a small Wiccan population, but they’ve been at constant battle with the Christian town who has even held meetings to discuss “driving out the witches” more than once over the years.

(almost) Anywhere in Arizona

Arizona is like the Alabama of the Southwest in that it is full of incredibly religious people; People who are so religious that zealotry is the norm. While larger cities like Mesa and Phoenix might be okay, the majority of the smaller towns are heavily Christian with disdain toward non-Christian people. Arizona even had its own witch trial less than a century ago — far more recent than any other witch trial in the U.S.

Mount Juliet, Tennessee

Mount Juliet is home to notorious pastor Greg Locke, who went viral when he led a scathing sermon threatening witches in his area. While there might be a small population of Wiccans or other types of witchcraft practitioners in the area, they’re clearly not welcome by the religious population and the pastor they follow.

Other towns

Any small town in the bible belt is probably a bad choice if you openly practice witchcraft. Small, isolated towns in the Northeastern part of the U.S. are also questionable. Do your research on any town before you move to make sure they’re witch-friendly.

Mugwort is an easy-to-grow perennial that grows so well it’s considered invasive in some areas. It’s also one of the most important herbs in witchcraft. This versatile herb can be utilized in all kinds of ways to add to your own spiritual practice. The following is some of what you need to know as a witch about mugwort.

Healing

Mugwort has been used as a healing herb for countless years. Ancient dollarpeans believed that it was one of the sacred herbs given to humans by Woden (or Odin). It also has place in ancient Asian cultures both used in healing and culinary applications. Some of the healing properties of mugwort include the following:

Menstrual issues: Women have long used mugwort to treat common menstrual issues such as irregularity and for cramps and bloating. Mugwort causes the uterus to contract, which can cause your period to start if it’s late.

Gastrointestinal: Stomachaches, diarrhea and also constipation are ailments that mugwort has treated historically.

Depression and anxiety: Mugwort has been used to treat minor psychological distress such as bouts of depression or anxiety.

Insomnia: Mugwort has historically been used to ease sleeping issues.

Spiritual Uses

Mugwort is considered one of the most important herbs in witchcraft for numerous reasons. It has a wide variety of uses, making it a versatile spell ingredient, and botanical for spiritual house cleansing — just to name a few. The magical uses for mugwort include some of the following:

Lucid dreaming: Smoking mugwort or drinking a mild tea of it can have a slight sedative effect, but it is also said to inspire lucid dreaming. Some witches have used it for astral projection and other similar sleep and meditation spells.

Smoke cleansing: Instead of using white sage, use mugwort to smoke cleanse your surroundings.

Protection spells: Mugwort is excellent in protection spells, especially when planted in pots around your home.

Warding off negativity and bad dreams: Sachets containing mugwort can be put under a pillow to keep bad dreams away or to ward off spiritual attacks. Hanging a sachet of mugwort over your door can ward off negativity or drive away people with negative intent as well.

Warning

Do not drink mugwort tea if you’re pregnant. The chemicals in mugwort cause your uterus to contract, which causes miscarriage in early pregnancy if enough of it is consumed. This warning is because mugwort has been used to end unwanted pregnancies in the past.

You don’t have to rush out and buy ingredients and tools for every spell that you cast — though nobody is stopping you from doing so if you want. Whether you’re on a budget or just strapped for time, your home is likely packed with items that can be used for casting spells. The following list of ordinary household items double as effective tools and ingredients for any witch’s needs.

Birthday candles and home fragrance candles

If you want to cast a spell that “requires” the use of a candle, you probably have at least one type available to you in your home. Birthday candles can be used in a pinch when you don’t have the type of candle you prefer on hand. You can also use commercial jarred fragrance candles to get the job done. If you don’t have candles in the color that you want to correlated with your spell, that’s fine. Witches throughout history have improvised and altered spells to suit the tools they had available to them. You can certainly do the same.

Kitchen Utensils

A sturdy wooden spoon is just as good as any intricately carved, crystal-festooned wand you find on Etsy. In fact, kitchen witches often use their kitchen utensils in place of the ordinary wand, athame or what-have-you.

A paring knife from your kitchen drawer can be cleansed and used as an athame or other type of ceremonial blade. Sure, it’s not as aesthetic as what you see on social media, but it gets the job done.

An ordinary teaspoon for stirring your ritual teas and potions is just fine if you’re willing to put energy into it.

Any of your ordinary plates, bowls or dishes can be used for casting spells.

Soaps and household chemicals

If you don’t have the ingredients to make your own spiritual floor wash, you can take measures to cleanse, energize and bless ordinary commercial products that you already have on hand. Bars of soap, liquid hand soaps and dish soaps as well as laundry detergents and other forms of soap can all be utilized in your witchcraft practice. In fact, you might already do this without putting too much thought into it. This same logic can be applied to household chemicals such as floor and surface cleaners. Next time you want to do a floor wash or cleanse your home of negativity along with the dirt and grime — put some oomph into your normal mopping routine. Spiritually charge your mop water with incantations and visualization.

Air freshening sprays — especially those that make use of natural ingredients — also prove useful in casting spells. If you’re unable to burn candles or incense in your home or apartment for whatever reason, an appropriately scented spray serves as an excellent alternative — and many homes already have them on hand for housekeeping purposes.

Linens, Towels & Rags

Fabrics of all kinds are useful in casting spells, whether you’re making poppets or really anything else that calls for fabric. Household tea towels can be used as tarot cloth if you’re wanting to do a quick reading on your kitchen counter while you have your morning coffee. They can also be used to create fast, lazy poppets for any type of spells (especially binding spells). A pillowcase can be used in place of a ribbon and tied in knots for a binding spell, as long as you’re willing to part with that pillowcase of course. You can even use a bedsheet to spread out on the floor and use as a specific cloth for meditation and circle-casting.

Garage and utility room rags can be used in spiritual house cleansing, as long as you’re not using something so filthy that you’re dirtying up what you should be cleansing, of course. But on the other hand, a gross, greasy and smelly garage rag can be a highly effective ingredient to a sour jar, in case you’re wanting to do a little baneful magic with what you have on hand.

Garden plants and native “weeds”

If you have plants on your property — whether they be garden plants or native weeds and flowers — they can be useful in casting spells. Learn about the plants you have naturally available to you in your own backyard, and find ways to correlate them to herbs, flowers and plants that you’d ordinarily need to purchase for spells. Even blades of grass cut from your lawn could be highly symbolic tools in your witchcraft practice.

Use your imagination

Everything around you can be used magically if you’re creative enough and willing to see the magic in the mundane.

Daniel Spofford is a notable figure in witchcraft history, because he was the very last person to be legally accused of practicing the craft in the United States.  His case isn’t just notable for being the last of its kind in America, but also because of how recent it actually was. Furthermore, the setting of this notorious case is also of interest.

Lucretia Brown accused Daniel Spofford of practicing witchcraft in Salem, Massachusetts in the year 1875 in a civil case that can only be described as a big messy can of worms. According to documents from what is called “The Second Salem Witch Trial,” Brown accused Spofford of  using “mesmerization” in order to negatively impact her health, among other misfortunes in her life.

Ultimately, the case was dismissed, but it became known as the last actual witch trial in the United States.

Genealogy of Daniel Spofford

For being the subject of a famed “witch trial” in the late 1800s, Daniel Spofford is a hard man to trace. There happens to be a handful of men by the same men who lived in the 1700s — most of whom died many years before the 1875 witchcraft accusations. These men are clearly not our Daniel Spofford. He may have been a son (a junior) of one of these earlier Daniel Spoffords, but that can’t be confirmed at this time.

Further research into who Daniel H. Spofford was hasn’t returned much information. At this time, all that is known about this man is that he was a Christian Scientist who was brought up on accusations of witchcraft in a Salem courthouse in the 1870s. No marriage records are available in this name — during this era — to indicate that Spofford ever married or had children.
